Five Events for People with Disabilities

Whether you are an avid sports fan, passionate about advocacy, or wanting to learn more about the latest technology in mobility equipment, there are many events you can go to throughout the year. Though there are plenty that are held around the world, it can be difficult to know which ones would be worth your time, based on your interests. We have gathered a list of different events and conferences, primarily in the United States, that are centered around the disability community.

Abilities Expo

The Abilities Expo is a three-day event for anyone: people with disabilities, their families, caregivers, seniors and healthcare professionals. During this time, there are a variety of products and services showcased to attendees with the goal of introducing opportunities to enrich lives through different technologies. As of right now, there are Abilities Expos in eight different locations around the United States and Canada. Loaner scooters are available during the expo on a first-come, first-serve basis, so be sure to check out the scooter loaner area!

National Veterans Wheelchair Games

Another annual event that you won’t want to miss is the National Veterans Wheelchair Games. It is open to veterans with spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis, amputations and other central neurological impairments with the goal to increase their independence and quality of life and promote health activities. To take advantage of the opportunities to educate veterans on accessibility, travel, adaptation, and more, the Games are held in a different city each year. The National Veterans Wheelchair Games is co-presented between the Department of Veterans Affairs and Paralyzed Veterans of America and spans over several days. There are 19 different events in which veterans can choose to participate, including wheelchair basketball, softball, swimming, cycling and power lifting. If you are interested in learning more and even registering for the next Games, you can visit their website.
