DURYEA, PA – Pride Mobility Products® and Quantum Rehab® offered approximately 20 Luzerne Intermediate Unit (LIU) 18 students with disabilities an opportunity to be mentored by career professionals in various fields during Disability Mentoring Day (DMD) 2018 on Thursday, Oct. 18 at the company’s Duryea facility.
DMD is designed to bring students with disabilities into the workplace where they can learn about various career paths. Through Pride and Quantum’s 9th Annual DMD event, participants had the opportunity to meet with professionals to learn the typical job responsibilities and the necessary knowledge and skills needed for a specific vocation. Careers in research and development, sales, technical service, and production were highlighted. The students were able to tour the production area and see a brand-new, expanded test lab.
“Our plan is to continue to be a very friendly company,” said Scott Meuser, Chairman and CEO of Pride and Quantum. We’re always trying to make products that make a difference in people’s lives. We’re glad you’re here to see that, and we’re glad you’re learning.”
Many of the students, including Elizabeth Breznay, who is also a student at Wyoming Area Secondary Center, attend the event each year and look forward to it. Elizabeth’s parents were also at the event and communicated her enthusiasm.
“She enjoyed hanging out and talking with Kiel (Eigen), who works in research and development,” said Helene Breznay, Elizabeth’s mom. “She loves being here.”
Denise Truesdale, Vice President of Human Resources at Pride and Quantum, said she is proud that LIU 18 is including Pride and Quantum in their Practical Assessment Exploration System (PAES) Program in 2019 through Disability Mentoring Day.
DMD originated at the White House in 1999 with less than three dozen local individuals participating. Now hosted by the American Association of People with Disabilities, the nation’s largest cross-disability membership organization, DMD has evolved significantly to encompass participation in all 50 states and many countries around the world.
