How to Clean Your Mobility Scooter

Electric scooters are sophisticated pieces of equipment. In order to ensure that your mobility scooter gives you trouble-free performance, it requires routine maintenance checks. While you can perform some of these checks yourself, you may need to schedule some inspections and maintenance checks with your provider.

Use a damp cloth to clean the plastic and metal parts of the unit. You can use a mild, non-abrasive cleanser. If necessary, the electric scooter can be cleaned with an approved disinfectant, but not before making sure that the disinfectant is safe for use on the scooter. Please avoid using any products that may scratch the surface on your mobility scooter and keep it clean and free of foreign material, such as mud, dirt, hair, food, drink, etc.

Because the front tiller shroud, front shroud, and the rear shroud are formed from durable ABS plastic and are coated with an advanced formula urethane paint, a light application of car wax will help the shrouds retain their high gloss.

Bumpers, tires and trim can benefit from an occasional application of a rubber or vinyl conditioner, but make sure to never use a rubber nor vinyl conditioner on the vinyl seat or tire tread, as this may cause them to become dangerously slippery. Instead, use soapy water and dry the seat thoroughly. Items such as the axle bearings and motor/transaxle assembly are all pre-lubricated and sealed, so they do not require any subsequent lubrication.

Never hose off your mobility scooter or place it in direct contact with water.  We suggest immediately cleaning up any moisture and spills that could affect your product. If the electronics, console, and/or charger get wet, they can become damaged and you may need to get your scooter repaired. While the motor brushes should be inspected periodically for wear by your provider, there are some maintenance checks that you can do at home.

Checking Your Electric Scooter’s Tire Pressure

It is important that you regularly inspect your mobility scooter’s tires for signs of wear. If your scooter has pneumatic tires, it is vital to always maintain the psi/bar/kPa air pressure rating, which is indicated on each tire. Do not underinflate or overinflate your tires. Low pressure may result in loss of control, and overinflated tires may burst. Failure to always maintain the psi/bar/kPa air pressure rating indicated on the tires may result in tire and/or wheel failure.

Checking Your Mobility Scooter’s Battery Terminal Connections

There are a few things to look out for when checking your mobility scooter’s battery terminal connections. It is essential to make certain that the terminal connections remain tight and uncorroded and that the battery terminals should face towards the inside of the scooter. The batteries must sit flat in the battery wells.

Checking Your Scooter’s Wiring Harness

Another maintenance check that you can perform at home is looking at the mobility scooter’s wiring harness. Check all wiring connections and insulation, including the charger power cord, for wear or damage. If you encounter any damaged connector, connection, any insulation or signs of corrosion of any electrical components, schedule an appointment with your provider to repair or replace as necessary before using your scooter again.
